Local Attractions
All along the Turks and Caicos Islands, there is much to see and do. You will find several historic sites, coral reefs to snorkel around, and spectacles of nature that will take your breath away. There are many tour services along these islands for water sports, humpback whale watch, horseback riding, and other activities. Below is a list of attractions you can mostly find and do without a tour guide.
Many people say if you go to the Turks and Caicos, you must see Mudjin Harbor. It might cost you a ferry ride, but the location has one of the most beautiful views on the island. It is nearly secluded on the beach, and once you head further inland, you’ll find restaurants for a bite to eat.
Little Water Cay is basically iguana island. It is a nature reserve and a small island that is home to rock iguanas. Getting to the island is not hard if you take a boat trip or even paddle there yourself, and once on the island, there are boardwalks to give you a sense of where to go. The iguanas are said to be very approachable, but please do not feed or touch them. The species is endangered.
Smith’s Reef – near Turtle Cove Marina; one of the best reefs in the area, you’ll get the most out of snorkeling here. The surrounding beach is not crowded and the waters are easily accessible. The only drawback is the reef is a bit hard to find at first, but once you do, it’s an enjoyable experience. You may see wild marine life, and be sure to not harm the reef, as it is a living thing.
Bight Reef – Providenciales; also easy to reach, if you go to the car pack and then walk to the end of the beach, you should find a reef with rope around it not far from shore. This rope is there to designate where to swim without harming the reef. The reef was once much grander, but prior to the installation of the rope, people unknowingly harmed it by standing on it, taking pieces of coral, etc. However, this reef has many comments about the marine life you may see.
Coral Gardens Reef – Princess Alexandra National Park, Providenciales; said to be the best reef for beginners, the reef is just five feet from the shore. The water is also the most clear here, so snorkeling is an easy and enjoyable experience. As with the other reefs, you may see marine life, but be sure not to harm the reef or antagonize the animals you do see.

Home to the Coral Gardens Reef, this park isn’t actually just one location. Every public park around the islands is said to be a part of the Alexandra National Park, each with powder sand beaches and pristine water. If you have a chance, visit one of the local restaurants for a tasty fish fry.

Cheshire Hall is one of the key historical attractions to see while visiting Providenciales among the Turk and Caicos Islands. It is made up of 200 year-old ruins that once belonged to a cotton plantation. There is a lot of history attached to it, but it’s simply fascinating to see all on it’s own.
Brought in pieces from the UK, this lighthouse was constructed to guard the northern tip of Grand Turk. It’s a nice spot to watch for humpback whales, have a picnic, or go to the top of the lighthouse for the view.
The Middle Caicos Caves are an impressive chain of limestone caves. This attraction is a must-see, with many tours available to take you to them. After going through the caves, a perfect way to end the trip is with some snorkeling and lunch at Mudjin Grill if close by.
Best for those look for an adventure, this 40 foot-wide hole has an 80-foot drop into a swimming hole. You can be lowered down by a rope into this massive limestone hole, just make sure to take safety precautions. 80 feet is a long way down.
